Nicolette Spear

Nicolette Spear’s art is sensual, expressive, and free at the same time as it is methodically calculated. Just like everything in life, it is filled with a yin/yang contrast of dark and light, loose and tight, feminine and masculine. She paints in oils because they are smooth, soft, and even the musky, rich, dark smell appeals to her. Painting is a tactile experience for Nicolette, and the softness of oil paints and brushes echoes the softness of the curves of the female figures that she paints. Her figures are defined by shadows — and this is not a coincidence. As a bisexual female artist, Nicolette’s work touches on subjects of female sexuality, self-love, female strength, and the vulnerability of looking into one’s own shadowy places. The baroque-inspired style of her work is an intentional contrast with her contemporary female persona.
